Objectives: The course enables students to acquire the concepts or paradigm of both Qualitative and  Quantitative researches. The students are also directed to have an understanding about kinds of research belong to the Qualitative and Quantitative  researches, the procedures of conducting Qualitative and Quantitative researches in, especially, language research. Moreover, the course facilitates the students to be able to write background of the study, formulate research questions and their objectives, formulate hypotheses, select and present appropriate research designs, determine data collection methods and their instruments, check the validity of qualitative and quantitative data, present data and analyze them, and to write a research proposal. To enlarge the students’ horizon in Qualitative and Quantitative Study, some terms commonly used will also be introduced proportionally.

 

Content: This course provides the students the concept or paradigm and the procedures of conducting Qualitative and Quantitative researches covering linguistic, language teaching, language assessment, and literacy researches and their methodology as well as activities of analyzing linguistic and literacy research proposal/research report. This will cover the discussions on determining research area, writing a good background of the study, formulating research questions, designing the objectives of the study, determining the scope and limitation of the study, presenting research method, determining research design, designing research instruments, presenting data and its analysis (interpretation), and writing a research proposal.
