The course aims at providing students with an introduction to the principles and the basic concepts of English syntax (syntactic theory). It is designed to assist students in mastering the theory of English Syntax as the foundation of English language and literature. Students will be familiarized with the concepts and terminology used in syntactic theory. The topics in this course includes: four syntactic structures (structure of modification, structure of predication, structure of complementation, and structure of coordination) in descriptive syntax, generative approach to English syntax, syntactic categories and functions, phrase structure rules, and transformational rules. We will also briefly introduce several major competing theories of grammar including parts of speech, constituents, trees, rules, and binding theory. The course concentrates on the basic concepts and methods of syntactic analysis, and focuses on the practical analysis and description of a wide range of phenomena from a variety of languages. The teaching activities include: lectures, discussions, analysis, and tasking.
